Justin Lachal

Accountant. Adviser. Board Director.

Justin started his career at KPMG, where he built a foundation in financial analysis, audit methodology, and commercial advisory work. He went on to hold senior roles at the ANZ Banking Group and Jones Lang LaSalle, working across banking, property, and corporate finance with clients including Telstra, ANZ, and Australia Post.

That corporate grounding led to a different kind of challenge: as General Manager of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, Justin applied rigorous financial thinking to an organisation where decisions carry weight beyond the balance sheet. Managing property portfolios, parish finances, and institutional governance sharpened his belief that good financial tools should serve the people making decisions — not the other way around.

Today Justin works independently, bringing the same discipline to boards, councils, NFPs, and small organisations that need clear-headed financial advice without the overhead of a large firm. He sits on the board of Jesuit Social Services and Sunraysia Institute of TAFE (SuniTAFE), and holds a deep interest in how public and community organisations can make better decisions with limited resources.

Why I give tools away for free

Better decisions should not be trapped behind a sales conversation. The models, checklists, and frameworks on this site are designed to be useful on their own. Download them. Adapt them. Use them. If you want help interpreting the results, testing the assumptions, or adapting a model to your specific situation — that is when you hire me.

What I believe

  • Good decisions deserve clear assumptions
  • Public money deserves serious thought
  • Spreadsheets are useful servants and bad masters
  • Finance should help people decide, not intimidate them
  • Reviews should teach, not punish

Ethics and independence

As a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, I work under the profession's Code of Ethics. In plain terms, that means:

  • Integrity — I am straightforward and honest in all professional relationships.
  • Objectivity — I do not let bias, conflict of interest, or outside pressure override my professional judgment.
  • Competence — I only take on work I am qualified and equipped to do well.
  • Confidentiality — Information shared with me stays confidential unless you agree otherwise.
  • Independence — I have no vendor relationships, referral arrangements, or financial interests that could colour my advice.
